Acidic water can be very harmful and corrosive to the plumbing in your house or the metals in your appliances. Water with a PH below 7 is considered acidic and should generally speaking be treated with an acid neutralizing filter. This filter uses naturally occurring minerals to raise the PH to a healthy level. The added benefit of a PH back-washing filter is that it can help remove some Iron and basic sediment.
Reverse osmosis filters were originally designed to remove salt and very specific chemicals from water. Some of these include fluoride, sodium, total dissolved solids (TDS) or chemicals like arsenic, radium, and nitrites, etc. RO filters are generally best suited for point of use applications and not in whole house applications.
Iron and manganese can be present in almost any water supply, but is most commonly found in well water. Too much in your water can create problems for your home or business staining fixtures and laundry and even clogging appliances.
In well water, Iron usually occurs in its ferrous state in which the water is clear when poured into a glass etc. Once this ferrous iron is exposed to air, however the iron often changes (oxidizes) into a ferric iron. This is especially true when the water is heated as in a hot water tank etc. When this happens the water turns red and forms insoluble “rust” particles.
