The gas water heaters operate by burning natural gas or LP (liquid propane), featuring a thermostat/gas control to set your desired temperature. When a hot water fixture is opened, hot water flows out of the tank and through the hot water lines in the home, with the tank refilling with cold water. The thermostat monitors the water temperature and initiates reheating as necessary. Standard gas models come with a standing pilot light, which ignites the gas at the burner when the thermostat calls for operation. In contrast, high-efficiency models utilize an electronic gas valve along with a spark or hot surface ignitor, eliminating the need for a standing pilot. Once the desired water temperature is achieved, the main gas valve shuts off, halting the heating process.
On the other hand, A. O. Smith electric tank water heaters utilize one or two electric heating elements to heat water. When a hot water tap is opened, street water pressure pushes cold water into the system through a dip tube, delivering it to the bottom of the tank and pushing hot water from the top out to the hot water pipes. Temperature sensors inside the tank signal the thermostat to activate the heating elements, ensuring a consistent supply of hot water throughout your home. Each electric tank water heater includes essential components like a thermostat, a temperature and pressure relief valve, and a drain valve, all of which are critical for effective water heater maintenance. The thermostat regulates the heating elements to maintain the specified temperature set on the control, ensuring reliable and safe operation.
